Ornate Gold and Blush Pink Wedding Cake!

We’d been looking forward to creating this gorgeous cake ever since Hilary got in touch with us all the way from NYC about her UK wedding. What’s not to love…? Pretty blush pink sugar roses, ornate gold painted moulding work, dainty stephanotis blooms and of course that amazing faux cake stand effect! We’d spotted the rather grand faux cake stand on several of Ron Ben-Israel‘s designs (definitely one of our favourite cake artists) and had always planned to re-create this look, but when you’re super busy with huge macaron orders, baking gourmet cupcakes and sending out sketches to happy couples you find that time soon passes! Anyway, when this request came through we were positively thrilled!

Ornate gold and blush pink wedding cake!

The cake features a separated section of pretty pink sugar roses (8 of our large sized to be exact) as well as gold berries, ice pink berries, gold laurel leaves, soft green rose leaves, frosted white berries and shapely stephanotis blossoms dotted around the top of the bottom tier. Having a crown of florals separating tiers is such a glamorous way to add height and drama to a cake.

The very top tier was adorned with our oversized rose created with 5 rows of a total of 27 blush pink sugar petals. Our giant roses are such as joy to make! The very last row of petals are wired so that they spread outwards often creating a bloom around 6 inches in diameter! Bigger florals on any cake (especially larger and taller wedding designs) help give the cake a definite focal point. We surrounded our oversized roses with various berries, white stephanotis and sugar leaves.

When it came to the moulding work we began looking for particular sized cartouche moulds that would work curved outwards to become the ‘feet’ of the faux cake stand holding the cake up. It had to look both elegant and substantial at the same time. Originally we tested flour de lys moulds we created from antique furniture features, but as lovely as these were they didn’t encompass the ornate look we were searching for. The cartouche mouldings we ended up using featured a central design and a good tapered (and detailed) end that worked perfectly as cake stand feet!

The rest of the moulding work on the cake consisted of matched up elements from different designs from a smaller and more circular cartouche, elongated/stylised oak leaves and Baroque style scrolls. For the swags Squires Kitchen happen to have a gorgeous range of historically inspired moulds that included a beautiful rose festooned garland which helped tie in the sweet florals on the cake!

Oh that faux cake stand effect… another amazing way to add some height and drama to a cake. If you’re looking for that wow-factor we think this technique is definitely the answer! It’d make a plainer detailed cake really stand out as well as an ornately decorated design. How gorgeous would a simple white 3 tiered cake look with a gold or silver faux cake stand base and just a simple large floral on top?

It certainly was sad to see this cake leave us because we adored it so much from the soft pink roses to the shimmering gold details. Congratulations to the happy couple! We hope that Hilary, Tim and all their guests have an amazing wedding day!
