Super Magical Rainbow Unicorn Cake!

Yay! Here’s a ridiculously bright and fun rainbow unicorn cake we created for a birthday party. How insanely cool is this idea? We like to call this kind of cake a ‘freak cake’. It’s inspired by those crazy freakshake milkshakes that are covered with anything and everything sugar-coated. What’s so unicorn about this? Golden unicorn horn, magical sugary treats and rainbow… obviously!

Super magical rainbow unicorn cake!

We were asked to create a fun, gold drip cake for a 15th birthday that was bright in colour… and chocolate. We quickly sketched out our idea for a unicorn cake with a gold sequin drip (we LOVE adding those), a whole white chocolate bar jutting out of the top and oodles of rainbow sprinkles and candies. The lovely folks over at Bakesbox sent us an amazing bottle of their Unicorn Mix Sprinkles, which were utterly perfect for this little cake!

Inside is our Belgian chocolate cake filled with Madagascan vanilla and Belgian white chocolate truffle buttercream. The frosting covering the outside was also our Belgian white chocolate truffle buttercream, but with streaks of super bright colour! We coloured small amounts of frosting in fun neon pink, turquoise, lilac and lemon yellow. Added ‘splodges’ of each around the cake with a small palette knife and then used an icing scraper to create the streaked effect around the sides!

OK. Now for the list of biscuits, candies, chocolates etc that adorn the top and sides of this little beauty. Chopped up Flumps (they’re twisted marshmallow ropes to all the non-UK people out there, Party Rings (donut-like shaped cookies with a sugar glaze), rainbow Smarties, an entire bar of Belgian white chocolate, Bakesbox Unicorn Mix sprinkles, golden fondant unicorn horn, and a Belgian white chocolate ganache drip studded with white confetti sequin sprinkles then painted with edible gold.

Pretty in Pink Gold Sequin Drip Birthday Cake!

Yay! Who wouldn’t want to celebrate when they’ve got this beauty? Back in February we created this gorgeous pink buttercream smothered cake for a fun birthday. Adorned with large bloom white roses, our popular Strawberry Milkshake macarons, pink meringue kisses, a cute personalised gold pick and a glamorous gold sequin drip this cake sure is fabulous!

Gold sequin drip cake heaven!

We honestly can’t stop looking at or even photographing golden drips once we’ve finished a pretty cake like this. They’re gorgeous and oh so glam! To create our golden drips we pipe melted white chocolate along the edge of a chilled cake (though one heck of a steady hand is needed to make sure the drips don’t end up wonky or bumpy) then add confetti style sprinkles and hand paint the entire thing with an edible gold paint. The key bit to this look is making sure the cake is cold! The chilly feel of the cake helps set the chocolate drip as it works its way down the cake meaning no out of control puddles all along the base.

The cake itself was our classic and popular Madagascan vanilla flavour. Three lovely and moist layers of vanilla cake filled with our silky smooth vanilla bean infused buttercream then covered with pretty pastel pink tinted buttercream! Vanilla is definitely one of the best flavours to opt for when a party is involved… it keeps everyone happy!

Each of the Strawberry Milkshake macarons were whipped up, baked, filled and finished by us. It’s one of our most popular flavours for macarons (along with Raspberry Chambord and Salted Caramel). These were carefully arranged around the cake before any gaps were then filled in with pink vanilla meringue kisses, touches of 24k gold leaf, white confetti sprinkles a personalised cake pick and those beautiful large white roses!
