Yay! Here’s a ridiculously bright and fun rainbow unicorn cake we created for a birthday party. How insanely cool is this idea? We like to call this kind of cake a ‘freak cake’. It’s inspired by those crazy freakshake milkshakes that are covered with anything and everything sugar-coated. What’s so unicorn about this? Golden unicorn horn, magical sugary treats and rainbow… obviously!
Super magical rainbow unicorn cake!
We were asked to create a fun, gold drip cake for a 15th birthday that was bright in colour… and chocolate. We quickly sketched out our idea for a unicorn cake with a gold sequin drip (we LOVE adding those), a whole white chocolate bar jutting out of the top and oodles of rainbow sprinkles and candies. The lovely folks over at Bakesbox sent us an amazing bottle of their Unicorn Mix Sprinkles, which were utterly perfect for this little cake!
Inside is our Belgian chocolate cake filled with Madagascan vanilla and Belgian white chocolate truffle buttercream. The frosting covering the outside was also our Belgian white chocolate truffle buttercream, but with streaks of super bright colour! We coloured small amounts of frosting in fun neon pink, turquoise, lilac and lemon yellow. Added ‘splodges’ of each around the cake with a small palette knife and then used an icing scraper to create the streaked effect around the sides!
OK. Now for the list of biscuits, candies, chocolates etc that adorn the top and sides of this little beauty. Chopped up Flumps (they’re twisted marshmallow ropes to all the non-UK people out there, Party Rings (donut-like shaped cookies with a sugar glaze), rainbow Smarties, an entire bar of Belgian white chocolate, Bakesbox Unicorn Mix sprinkles, golden fondant unicorn horn, and a Belgian white chocolate ganache drip studded with white confetti sequin sprinkles then painted with edible gold.
